Beginner Friendly Easy Herringbone Crochet Beanie
Looking for a quick and stylish crochet beanie project? This easy herringbone stitch beanie works up in just a few hours and adds a touch of texture to your handmade accessory collection. Whether you’re making it as a gift or keeping it for yourself, this pattern is beginner-friendly and fun to crochet!
Materials Needed:
• 8 mm crochet hook (the one used in the tutorial is by Prym)
Note: If you crochet tightly, consider going up one or two hook sizes to keep your stitches loose for easier work. So my yarn recommended a size 6 mm hook and I went up two sizes to an 8 mm hook.
• Bulky weight (5) yarn – The beanie in the tutorial uses Premier Yarns x Elle by Me Charlotte in the color-way, Cherry Multi.
• Darning needle – For weaving in ends.
• Measuring tape – To measure your head or the project’s progress.
• Scissors
Abbreviations (US Terms):
• ch: Chain
• sc: Single crochet
• hb hdc: Herringbone half-double crochet
• st(s): Stitch(es)
Pattern Instructions:
Step 1: Create the Starting Chain
1. Begin with a slip knot on your hook.
2. Chain 31 for the standard beanie length.
• Optional: Adjust the chain length for a customized fit. For a fold-over brim, chain more; for no brim, chain less.
Step 2: First Row (Foundation Row)
1. Skip the first chain closest to the hook.
2. In the second chain, work 1 sc.
3. Insert your hook into the left leg of the sc you just made.
4. Yarn over and pull up a loop from the next chain, leaving 3 loops on your hook.
5. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops to complete your first hb hdc.
6. Repeat:
• Insert hook into the third leg of the previous hb hdc.
• Yarn over, insert into the next chain, and pull up a loop.
• Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.
7. Continue this stitch until you have 5 chains remaining.
Step 3: Single Crochets for the Last Five Stitches
1. Work 1 sc in each of the last 5 stitches.
2. Chain 1, then turn your work.
Step 4: Second Row (Back Loop Work)
1. Work 1 sc in the back loop only of the first 5 stitches.
2. Begin the hb hdc:
• Insert your hook into the left leg of the last sc.
• Work the hb hdc in the back loop only of the next stitch.
• Repeat this stitch across the row until you reach the final stitch.
3. In the final stitch, work an hb hdc under both loops instead of the back loop only.
4. Chain 1, turn your work.
Step 5: Repeat Rows Until Desired Size
• Continue alternating rows, ensuring:
• 5 sc in back loops only at one side of the beanie.
• An hb hdc under both loops for the final stitch on the opposite side.
• Work these rows until the rectangle wraps comfortably around your head.
• Example: For the tutorial, 37 rows were needed.
Step 6: Join the Seam
1. Fold the beanie in half with the right sides facing out.
2. Use your hook to single crochet through the back loops of both edges.
3. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for closing the top.
Step 7: Close the Top
1. Thread the tail onto your darning needle.
2. Weave the needle back and forth through the top edge of the beanie.
• Look for natural gaps at the top of each stitch.
• Pull tightly to cinch the top closed.
3. Secure with a knot and weave in the tail.
Step 8: Finishing Touches
1. Use the needle to sew an X across the top of the beanie for extra stability.
2. Weave in all remaining ends.
3. Shape your beanie and enjoy your new cozy accessory!
