Base:

Start with a magic circle.

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), work 9 hdc into the magic circle. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-2. (10 hdc)

Round 2: Ch 2, hdc in the same st, 2 hdc in each st around. Join with a sl st. (20 hdc)

Round 3: Ch 2, hdc in the next st, 2 hdc in the next st; repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st. (30 hdc)

Body:

Round 4: Ch 1, sc in the back loop of each st around. Join with a sl st. (30 sc)

Rounds 5-18: Ch 2, hdc in each st around. Do not join with a sl st at the end of each round. (30 hdc)

DO NOT FASTEN OFF! We will work on the handle portion now.

Keeping Stitches Straight (No More Slanted Seams!)

• Your first stitch of each round will be placed in what is technically the last stitch of the previous round.

• Skip the sl st.

• Your second stitch will go into what is technically the first stitch of the previous round.

• Continue working in this manner to keep your rounds aligned and prevent the seam from drifting sideways.

• Turn your work after your ch 1

Handle (Thermal Stitch for Extra Durability):

Ch 1 and turn your work

Row 1: sc in the front loops of the next 7 sts. Ch 1 and turn your work (7 sc)

Row 2: sc in the back loops of the 7 sts. Ch 1 and turn your work (7)

Rows 3-36 (Thermal Stitch):

• Insert your hook through the back loop of the current row and the unworked loop of the previous row.

• Yarn over, pull through both loops, yarn over, pull through two loops to complete a sc.

• Repeat across all stitches. Turn. (7 sc)

(This method creates a thick, double-layered handle.)

Ch 1 and leave a tail long enough to sew with.

Attach to Cozy:

• Lay the handle flat and align it with bottom of the can where the ridge is from round 4 of the base.

• Take your darning needle and stitch your handle to the ridge of round 4 of the base. You can use stitch markers to hold it in place and make sure it is straight.

• Fasten off and weave in ends.

Finishing:

• Fasten off and weave in all ends using a yarn needle.

• Slide the cozy onto your favorite can and enjoy!

Tips & Tricks for a Perfect Can Cozy

• Use Cotton Yarn – Cotton is the best choice for can cozies because it’s durable, absorbent, and holds its shape well.

• Adjust for Different Sizes – Add or remove rounds to fit different can or bottle sizes.

• Customize It! – Try using stripes, color changes, or a decorative edging to make it unique.
